A report co-authored by Chris Purcell of DRDC Atlantic, Bruce Armstrong of GeoSpectrum Technologies Inc. and James Crawford of Ultra Electronics Maritime Systems (UEMS), won best paper at the Undersea Defence Technology (UDT) conference in Hamburg, Germany on 27 June.
"A Modular Projector System, Modelled vs Measured Performance" describes a new high power sonar projector developed by UEMS. The Modular Projector System (MPS), developed using MAVART finite element software from DRDC Atlantic, is an underwater acoustic source that exploits closely spaced underwater sound projectors. It is unique because it can easily operate across a wide range of frequencies by re-configuring and repositioning itself, using the building blocks from which it is composed.
The MPS is a new product for UEMS, with one of the first units sold to the Canadian Forces Maritime Experimental Test Range. Other nations, including the U.S. and U.K. have expressed interest in the system, for both Anti-Submarine Warfare and harbour defence applications.
Doug Burd, President of UEMS, presented the paper and accepted the award on behalf of the authors.
